Hello, and Welcome to Luli's Homestead!
My name is Lilia, also known as 'Mama Lil' and 'Luli'.
This channel is about sharing my homesteading journey in southeastern New England. My roots grow deep in cooking, canning, gardening, herbalism, home-remedies, and raising livestock. Most of my learning came from growing up in a large Slavic family. My Mama and Papa planted a homesteading seed a long time ago, and now, I hope to share my knowledge with others. I hope to inspire the younger generation to learn how to be more self-sufficient.

Harvesting Honey with Fume Board. Is it Helpful?
Просмотров 50811 часов назад
There are multiple ways of harvesting honey frames. My Papa always uses the old-school method of shaking and gently brushing off bees. This year, I wanted to try using a Fume Board. #homestead #homesteading #bees #beekeeping #beekeeper #harvestinghoney

COOKING WITH WILD EDIBLES~ Stinging Nettle
Просмотров 793Месяц назад
Stinging nettle is very nutritious, especially in the spring. I love to cook with wild herbs that grow in my area. Here is the basic recipe for my Stinging Nettle Stew: -1 large bunch of nettle -4-6 medium potatoes (or turnips, is looking for a low-carb meal) - 1 large red onion ( a white will work as well) -2 med-size carrots -3 cloves garlic - 2 or 3 green scallions 3-4 tbs butter 1 cup chick...
HOW TO START CARROTS FROM SEEDS WITH BURLAP BAGS
Просмотров 478Месяц назад
Sowing seeds should not be stressful, but sometimes it is. I have tried many other methods and some did not work, actually failed. Over the years I have learned that carrots like cool, moist, soft soil. Carrot seeds can be sown directly into the soil outdoors 2 to 3 weeks before the last spring frost date. Unfortunately, seeds often dry up quickly as they are not very deep in the soil. The tric...

POLISH SAUSAGE AND CABBAGE KETO LUNCH
On another video, the man said 1 Tbles. Of yeast to 2 Tbles. Of sugar which is what I’m doing. Then dilute it into a five gal. Bucket. You say 1 to 1 he said 1 to 2 Tablespoons.
Just made this recipe with a few modifications. Got my Purslane and chicken thighs from local farmers market. I add Za’atar seasoning along with salt and pepper to chicken. I decided to sauté my two garlic cloves, sliced along with the peppers. Also I added a dash of oregano and paprika to stew. Served with crumbled feta cheese and buttered toasted sour dough bread.
That is the difference in 4 weeks with the yeast application!?! Where is my yeast.... ! I have heard using an aspirin... 600 mg blend with 1 cup water and add to sprayer... dilute. Spray on and the base of plants to help with immunity and disease control. Those bottom leaves should go. Too close to the ground. Snip and see. The application was 2 - 3 weeks. Going to be brave and try the yeast. Thank you! Just spray the Seven and wash the vegetables. Too many bugs to deal with there. Peace
Thank you, definitely removing those leaves.
I have fast acting yeast packets in the freezer... I aspire to bake... anyway, they have been in their 2 years. Can I use them for this method in the garden? Can we use it on peppers and eggplant as well as the tomatoes? Same family.... how about pumpkins or squash/cucs? Thank you from the Berkshires, W. Massachusetts. Best wishes for a wonderful summer! I did see another gentlemen use this method too. Nice! Peace Haha... 3:35 and you answered my question RE the type of yeast. haha. And 10:00 answered the second. Wonderful! Tums are good for fast acting calcium too! Peace
Lol, purslane is a hardy grower
It's everywhere!
I love the smell of the tomatoes plant ❤ is the plant medicinal🧐
I love the smell too, no, not medicinal
If I boil the usnea too long will it be bad for me?
Hi Luli! Your garden is beautiful and I think we will battle something every year and I found that every year the pests change from aphids, slugs, deer and rabbits. I never had a problem with earwigs thank goodness. Flowers are so beautiful and so important to the pollination of the garden. I brush my dogs and put the hair around my garden and it deters the deer. I do enjoy watching the deer in my front yard and wild turkeys as long as they stay out of my garden. Your meat birds are being vocal, lol. Have a very blessed day!
Thank you! Dog hair is a wonderful idea.
Slugs and pill bugs are crazy this year, as well. I was happy to just get a couple plants in my wall planters? They were happy. Next day they are half out becsuse a squirrrl was digging in them! No reason for it! 2 hot pepper plants in a black planter, so far as happy. Barring squirrels.... Judt brought dirt bags home, so i can put in potataoes and onion sets.
Best wishes!
Purslane!!
Yes!
Looks great. You are doing amazing jobs. Especialy apealing from where I watch(New Zealand) as we are middle of the winter. It will be fun harvesting. I saw your beautiful cabbages and that reminded me how I learned from my husband who is from Eastern Europe to ferment whole cabbages for the winter. With sauerkraut in between. With fermented cabbage we make cabbage roll in the winter and its delicious. Very simple to fermant whole cabbage.Thank you for the video. Cheers
Fermenting the whole cabbage is awesome! Maybe I should do a video about it. Thanks for the idea😀
@@lulishomestead6767 awesome!
Wow you have your work cut out for you!!
Lol, yes, we do😀
Can you turn your chickens loose to eat those pincher bugs in the garden?? We have earwigs up here and they have their favorite zinnia plants for sure- they are definitely attracted and most comfortable in mulched, shaded and damp conditions
We have hawks that love to eat my chickens. We try to protect them.
Absolutely beautiful 😍 thank you for sharing 🙏
Thank you!
You have pincher bugs, we have aphids and stink bugs. My tomatoes, basil and peppers were goners, but God is so good that some tomato seeds that were in the compost had sprouted and we transplanted them. I have plenty of chopped peppers in the freezer and basil can be started again as well. I also seeded some cherry tomatoes that are similar to tumblers, suitable for planting in hanging baskets, called "42 Days" (Heritage Harvest Seeds in Canada), and they can go into my greenhouse if it gets chilly later on. Stink bugs are on my black currant, lilac and raspberry plants. I would go on patrol on sunny mornings with a bucket with some toilet bowl cleaner in it, and brush them into it. Then they got flushed.
We did this but in One step,,, works like a charm!!
Cou.d i do the same thing with a whole leg of pork. Thank you
Now thats yummy, have to try
The reason your mother put the butter on top, it allowes to filling to be easilý spread
Thank you for this wonderful video. I have a question that I hope you can answer. Can I follow the same method with other leafy vegetables? Arugula... lettuce... parsley... coriander... mint... I have a lot of them and I was thinking about freezing them to use later in preparing green smoothies.
How do you keep the squash bugs away from your pumpkins?
The first one We called it mchicha in swahili and the second one we called it rigla the other one I didn’t know they can eatable thank you
If someone were worried about the salt content...could they give it a quick rinse after removing some from the jar?
Even though long but I love your clip 💋❤️💋❤️
Just wondering, do you have trouble with black bears? I know you are farther north in CT than I in Danbury but I've had my bee yard devastated twice over the years.
No bears around here…
Will this work on potted plants?
I do not have any beehive so can not give my opinion of this. Still I enjoyed the video. Thank you. Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it!
Those are 4 deeps, not supers. There is a difference in height of box for super!
Hi Luli! We always used smoke and a delicate bee brush to get the bees off the frames and then we put them in a storage container that has a lid so the bees couldn’t get back on the frames. It was a lot lighter to carry than a wooden frame box. Good job doing it yourself and you’re right, it’s easier with two people. Good to know about the spray, I’ve never found anything that really works either except smoke. Have a blessed day!
Thanks for sharing!
You are a very capable ad brave woman
These are all invasive plants. Too bad you couldn’t invest in the native ecosystem because there’s rich nutrition in that.
Hello Luli! Do you have any recipes for cats dewormer?I love your videos. They are very informative and I learned a lot from you. Thank you so much.
Awesome trying out wine yeast
Thank you this video is short, perfectly explained 🤩🙌😉. I’m will try a second planting of beets as well, it’s 7/4/24 so I’m guessing I will get a second crop😉
Thankyou for your video. Here in Canada, i have lots of clover in my yard waiting to be picked before lawn mower hits it & will check out others i might have growing. No pesticides used.
I'm soo confused, my chickens have been drinking spring water for 35 generations
Thanks for making the video, I have seen some YT videos where they mention this solution is not good for Tomato plants, can anyone confirm if this has any adverse affect?
Wouldn't it benefit the chickens to have the "mother" to eat, when.the cider is gone? They love to eat all kinds of weird stuff....
Great question! I break it up into the vinegar liquid
Hi Luli! Apple cider vinegar and garlic is good for us and chickens. The chickens don’t even mind the taste either. Thanks for sharing the natural ways to take care of our chickens. Love the old time remedies for us and our animals. Have a very blessed day!
Do you use dry garlic or fresh?
@@lulishomestead6767 fresh and I make like a paste and mix it in their water.
That is interesting combination. I do not have chickens but will make sure to tell my friends who do. You always have interesting tips. Thank you! Cheers
😀
I also use vinegar and garlic for my chickens. Great video.
Good stuff
Thanks nice video I cant wait, I have about 1/2 acre of really nice Dandelion flowers was wondering what to do with them Thanks
Great, thank you!
Would you use the same ratio of salt:herb if using other herbs such as parsley, cilantro, basil, and rosemary?
Would love a glass. 😊
🍷
I have 2 demijohns in my basement. Man who built this place, used to make wine. ..
Now it’s your turn😉
Long process, but definitely worth it! 👍
The whole year went in a blink of an eye
Hi Luli! My great grandfather and my grandmother used to make wine, most of the time it was muscadine wine. I remember being real young and them making wine. Your wine looks amazing. Have a blessed night!
Thank you! Always love to hear your stories ☺️
That looks delicious 🍷
It is!
